From Apprentice to Account Manager: Climbing the ladder at Golley Slater

After leaving sixth form in 2016, Isabelle (Issy) began her apprenticeship with Sgil Cymru in October 2017 before graduating in January 2019.

Let’s find out a bit more about Issy and her time with us…

What were you doing before your apprenticeship at Golley Slater? And how did you hear about us?

Having worked in hospitality on a part time basis throughout my final years in education, I continued to work in various restaurants after leaving sixth form whilst toying with the decision of whether to go to university.

One of my regular customers happened to be a Careers Advisor at Careers Wales who advised me of the possibility of embarking on an apprenticeship. She explained how it was a great alternative to attending university and I was immediately interested.

She helped me to build a CV and I began looking for an apprenticeship I felt best suited me. After drawing a blank, a family friend who worked in radio knew I had a flare for creativity and suggested looking into advertising agencies.

Whilst searching for a suitable course, I came across Golley Slater and knew immediately, I HAD to apply.

How did the apprenticeship help you succeed to where you are now?

Apprenticeships provide you with the best of both worlds. An industry-focussed education combined with real work-life experiences. My apprenticeship with Golley’s not only allowed me to get my foot in the door at a renowned agency, I was also able to surround myself with wonderful professionals with years of experience and a wealth of knowledge. All of this made completing my qualification a breeze.

Your favourite part about Golley Slater?

Without a doubt, the people are my favourite part about Golley’s. I feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by and work closely with the most lovely and supportive people.

I couldn’t talk about my favourite part of Golley’s without mentioning the weird and wonderful campaigns I have the pleasure of working on. No day is ever the same and that’s what makes agency life so fresh and exciting.

Anything to say to people thinking about doing an apprenticeship at Golley Slater? Tips? Advice?

My best advice for anyone thinking about doing an apprenticeship at Golley’s would be to make sure you converse and build relationships with people from different departments. Not only will this help piece together how agencies work, it will also provide you with great insight into other exciting campaigns and projects.

Try to attend as many Lunch and Learns as you can – they are a great tool and will help you massively when it comes to completing your qualifications.

Lastly, get stuck into the fun culture. We are a lovely bunch and love a social!
